Description of the panel:
June 2016 is marked by the convention of the Holy and Great Synod of the Orthodox Church, which shall gather representative of all local Orthodox Churches all around the globe to discuss issues of inter-ecclesiastic life as well as the role of the Church in the contemporary world. This historic event has been preparing for almost a century, and Belarusian hierarchs and theologians also took part in pre-conciliar process (for example, Bishop Aliaksei of Hrodna (Hramadzki), archpriest Vital Baravoi, Metropolitans of Minsk Nikodim and Filaret). Another Synod to be in focus in 2016 is so called Lviv Synod of 1946, which has abolished Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church unifying it with the Russian Orthodox Church. These two important dates were selected as focus-points to reflect on the role of synods and synodality or conciliarity in the Church’s life. In particularly, the interdisciplinary and inter-confessional section of the Congress will deal with the following issues: history of synods, their agenda, ideas and documents; geopolitical, socio-political, ecumenical and inter-Orthodox context of the synods; reception of the synods and their decision for the Church in general and Belarusian Churches in particular.
You can participate in the Congress as a speaker (in this case you need to submit an abstract of your paper 2-4 thousand characters long) or a guest without a paper. You can also apply for presentation of academic and cultural projects, publications, exhibitions etc. Journalists and media representatives are encouraged to participate in the event.
